Meet this young black entrepreneur, cartoonist, designer, activist

Maya Penn has been drawing ever since she was able to hold a pencil, and she has been making animated flip books since she was 3 years old.

At age 3 she learn about when animator was. ” There is a program on TV about jobs most kids don’t know about.”

“When i understood that an animator makes the cartoons i saw on TV, I immediately said that is what i want to be.”

When she discovered about animator, it was a very defining moment in her life and she was willing to become an animator.

Maya Penn said animation and arts has always been her first since she was growing up as a child.It was her love for technology that spark the idea for “Malicious Dishes”

“There was a virus in my computer and it was trying to get rid of it. Also i thought , what if viruses have their own little world inside? And may be a restaurant where they meet up and does viruses things and thus “Malicious Dishes”
was Born”

“At the age of four my dad taught me how to take a computer apart and put it back again. That started my love for technology”

Maya Penn built her first website on her own using HTML and she learned Java-script and python. She is also working on an animated series Called “The Pollinators” It about bees and other pollinators in our environment and why they are so important.

All of her animations starts with ideas. She also makes Eco-friendly clothing and accessories. She started her business in 2008 and she is currently 13 years old. Her mom also taught her how to sew. After which she started making products like hats, scarves and bags. She is currently having customers in Denmark, Italy, Austria and Canada.

” now i have a lot to learn about my business, like branding, and marketing, staying engaged with my customers and seeing what sold the most and least.” She was contacted by Forbes Magazine when she was 10 years old. Forbes Magazine wanted to feature her and her company in their articles. A lot of people ask me why is your business Eco-friendly


She said .. ” I have a passion for protecting the environment and it creatures since i was little”.

This is an inspiration to many more black kids out there.
